Leisure batteries are the workhorses of caravanning, motorhoming and boating. They keep the fridge running, the lights on and the water pump primed when there is no mains hook-up in sight. Choosing the right one comes down to understanding how you use your vehicle and how much power you actually need.
What a Leisure Battery Does
Unlike a car battery, which delivers a short, high burst of current to turn an engine over, a leisure battery is designed to release a steady supply of power over a long period. That difference matters. A starter battery pushed into deep-cycle service will fail early, while a leisure battery used for engine cranking will not cope with the demand.
Most leisure batteries fall into three broad types:
- Flooded (wet) batteries — the traditional option, affordable and widely available, but they need topping up with distilled water and must be kept upright.
- AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries — sealed, maintenance-free and better at handling vibration and deeper discharges. A popular choice for motorhomes and boats.
- Gel batteries — sealed and highly resistant to deep cycling, though they cost more and need a compatible charging profile.
Matching Capacity to Your Needs
Battery capacity is measured in amp-hours (Ah). As a rough guide, a small caravan running lights, a pump and a radio might draw 5–10Ah per day, while a motorhome with a compressor fridge, TV and charging devices can easily use 40Ah or more.
A useful rule of thumb is to avoid discharging a lead-acid leisure battery below about 50 per cent of its rated capacity. Doing so regularly shortens its life. If your daily consumption is 30Ah, you would want at least 60Ah of usable capacity — and ideally more for headroom.
Charging and Maintenance
How a battery is charged has as much bearing on its lifespan as how it is discharged. Key points to keep in mind:
- Use a charger with a profile suited to your battery type. AGM and gel batteries generally require different voltages from flooded ones.
- Split-charge relays or battery-to-battery chargers let a vehicle’s alternator top up the leisure battery while driving.
- Solar panels are a common addition for off-grid touring, though their output depends heavily on season and weather.
- Keep terminals clean and check electrolyte levels on flooded batteries regularly.
Signs a Battery Needs Replacing
Leisure batteries do not last forever. A well-cared-for lead-acid battery might give three to five years, while lithium and premium AGM options can last considerably longer. Warning signs include:
- Rapid voltage drop under light loads
- Taking far longer to charge than it once did
- Swelling, cracking or a sulphur-like smell
- Repeatedly failing to hold a charge overnight
Getting the Right Fit
Physical size matters as much as electrical specification. Battery compartments in caravans and motorhomes are often tight, and terminal layout needs to match existing cabling. Before buying, check the dimensions, terminal type and hold-down arrangement of the battery you are replacing.
